What Is a Video Borescope?

A Video Borescope, also referred to as an Inspection Camera, is a long bundle of flexible optical fibers that has the ability to capture video or still images from an end camera to a video display. Due to the optical fibers, a borescope has the ability to access small out of reach areas as well as reach cavities which are around a bend such as tube bundles or combustion chambers.

Why and When Are Borescopes Used?

Commonly on board vessels borescopes are used to decipher the cleanliness of a piece of equipment or machinery prior to or during the Period of Performance (POP) date.

As a pre-inspection or “routine maintenance”, borescopes are used for non-destructive testing techniques for recognizing imperfections or defects. This gives the ability to examine equipment or compartments with little to no disassembly. In post-inspections, borescopes are used within the process of checkpoints for Quality Assurance (QA) affirming the completion of a job and the complete satisfaction of our customers.

Uses for video borescopes include but are not limited to: Air vents and Ducts; exhaust stacks; all types of piping systems; condenser tubes; tube bundles; boilers; gas turbines, diesel engines and much more.
